The RYA Yachtmaster qualification and the MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency are closely related professional sailing credentials. The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical examination tests a candidate's ability to skipper a yacht in coastal and offshore waters, requiring 2,500 nautical miles of sea time, 50 hours of night sailing, and a minimum of five passages over 60 miles. The MCA OOW Certificate of Competency, required for commercial vessels over 24 metres, involves additional written examinations and an oral examination before an MCA examiner. Many providers offer combined Yachtmaster/OOW preparation courses, giving candidates the theoretical and practical grounding needed for both qualifications. Together these credentials form the foundation of a professional deck officer career in the yacht sector.
RYA Yachtmaster is a practical examination certificate; MCA OOW is a full Certificate of Competency required for commercial vessels over 24 metres. The Yachtmaster Offshore is a stepping stone towards the MCA OOW.
A minimum of 2,500 nautical miles, 50 hours of night sailing, and five passages over 60 miles are required before the examination.
The MCA OOW requires completion of STCW mandatory modules, a DoT/MCA oral examination, and supporting sea service documentation.
The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with a Commercial Endorsement allows you to work as master on commercially operated yachts up to certain tonnage limits. For larger vessels you need the MCA OOW CoC.
