Course Overview

STCW Basic Safety Training — formally known as STCW Basic Training (BT) under the 2010 Manila Amendments — is the foundational safety qualification package for anyone entering commercial seafaring. It is governed by STCW Convention Regulation VI/1 and the associated STCW Code Section A-VI/1, administered internationally by the IMO (International Maritime Organisation). In the UK, all courses must be delivered by an MCA-Approved Training Provider and assessed to the standards set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The course covers five competency areas. Personal Survival Techniques (PST) covers sea survival, liferaft deployment and abandonment procedures, assessed in a pool environment. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF) covers fire theory, equipment use and outdoor firefighting drills. Elementary First Aid (EFA) covers immediate life-saving measures, CPR and wound management. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) covers shipboard safety culture and working environment, updated from January 2026 per IMO MSC.560(180) to include bullying and harassment. Most UK providers also bundle Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) at no extra cost, satisfying STCW Code A-VI/6-1.

Assessment is a mix of continuous practical evaluation and theory examinations. Because PST, FPFF and EFA require hands-on work — pool sessions, live fire drills, practical first aid scenarios — MCA rules prohibit online-only delivery for these modules. The full five-day programme cannot be completed remotely. PST and FPFF certificates require renewal every five years; EFA, PSSR and PSA do not.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 18 years
  • Must understand spoken and written English
  • Reasonable physical fitness — firefighting and sea survival components are demanding
  • Ability to swim (pool sessions required for PST)
  • No prior sea service required — entry-level course
  • No prior certificates required
  • ENG1 medical is not required to sit the course but is required to work commercially

What You'll Learn

  • Sea survival and liferaft use (PST — Table A-VI/1-1)
  • Fire theory, equipment and firefighting drills (FPFF — Table A-VI/1-2)
  • CPR, wound management and immediate first aid (EFA — Table A-VI/1-3)
  • Shipboard safety culture and working environment (PSSR — Table A-VI/1-4)
  • Recognising and responding to security threats (PSA — A-VI/6-1)
  • Abandonment procedures and personal protective equipment

Career Progression

STCW Basic Safety Training is the entry gate to commercial seafaring. No compliant employer can sign a crew member on without it. Here is where it sits in a typical deck officer or superyacht crew career path.

Before
No formal prerequisite
No prior certificates or sea service are required to enrol. Aspiring crew sometimes complete an ENG1 seafarer medical or an RYA Competent Crew course beforehand, but neither is a formal requirement for this course.
This course
STCW Basic Safety Training
Certifies you in the four mandatory STCW safety competencies (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR) plus security awareness. Required before being assigned designated safety or pollution-prevention duties on any commercial vessel.
Next step
Advanced STCW Endorsements
BST is a prerequisite for further MCA endorsements including PSCRB (Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats), Advanced Firefighting, Medical First Aid and OOW Deck officer training programmes.
Roles this qualification opens up: BST combined with an ENG1 medical is the standard day-one requirement for superyacht crew employment. It is mandatory for all crew holding designated safety duties aboard commercial vessels over 24 metres — covering superyachts, sailing vessels, passenger vessels, cargo ships and ferries. Further progression leads through Watchkeeping sea service and GMDSS Radio Operator qualifications towards Officer of the Watch (OOW), Chief Mate and ultimately Master Unlimited (Master Mariner) under the MCA Certificate of Competency framework.

Renewal and revalidation. PST and FPFF certificates must be renewed every five years. Seafarers with 360 or more days of sea service in the five-year validity period may take a shorter two-day revalidation course. Those without 360 days must complete a three-day refresher. EFA, PSSR and Proficiency in Security Awareness certificates do not expire and do not require formal renewal once completed. Always verify current revalidation requirements with the MCA or your chosen provider before booking.
