Master Certificates of Competency for vessels of 200, 500, and 3,000 gross tonnes represent the senior deck officer qualifications in the commercial maritime sector. In the UK these are issued by the MCA under the STCW framework and require substantial sea service, completion of mandatory STCW modules, written examinations, and an oral examination before an MCA examiner. The Master 500 GT is common in the superyacht sector, qualifying holders to command vessels up to 500 gross tonnes in unlimited waters. The Master 3000 GT extends this to larger commercial vessels. In the US, equivalent qualifications are issued by the USCG and cover 100, 200, 500, 1600, and 3000 gross tonnes. Preparation courses are intensive and may run from several weeks to months, covering navigation, meteorology, stability, maritime law, and ship management.
A Master 500 GT CoC from the MCA allows you to command commercial vessels up to 500 gross tonnes in unlimited waters. It is the most sought-after senior qualification in the superyacht sector.
Requirements vary by route and flag state. Typically a minimum of 36 months sea service as an officer, including 12 months as chief mate, is required. Check MCA guidelines for your specific pathway.
Written examinations covering navigation, meteorology, stability, cargo, and maritime law, plus an MCA oral examination. The USCG route has its own written examination structure.
USCG and MCA certificates are not directly interchangeable. You may need to apply for recognition or complete additional requirements. Flag state endorsements are handled case by case.
