HELM (Human Element Leadership and Management) at Operational Level is an MCA-approved leadership and management training course required under the STCW Manila Amendments for officers at the operational level. The course covers leadership skills, team-building, task and workload management, situational awareness, and decision-making under pressure. It is typically five days long and uses scenario-based learning. HELM Operational is required for seafarers holding or working towards OOW or EOOW certificates on vessels over 500 GT. It is distinct from HELM Management Level, which is required for senior officers (chief mate, master, chief engineer). Many MCA-approved colleges include HELM in their OOW preparation programmes, but it can also be taken as a standalone short course.
