How the deck career ladder works
Deck is the most certificate-driven career path in yachting. Progression is gated at each stage by a combination of sea time, RYA qualifications and MCA Certificates of Competency. The governing document for yacht deck officers in the UK is MSN 1858 (M+F) Amendment 2, which came into effect on 18 May 2026, always check the current MCA guidance at gov.uk/mca before applying.
There are also two certificates every deck crew member needs before any of the below applies: STCW Basic Safety Training and an ENG1 seafarer medical. Without both of these, you cannot work on any professional commercial yacht.
Entry level. STCW Basic Safety Training and ENG1 are the only statutory requirements to begin working as deck crew. Most captains also expect RYA Powerboat Level 2 on yachts that carry tenders, and an SRC VHF licence if you will operate marine radio. From day one, every day of sea service counts toward the figures required for your OOW application.
Sea time: no minimum to start, accumulation begins immediatelyThe most senior non-officer deck crew role, responsible for seamanship, maintenance and managing the deck team. There is no MCA Certificate of Competency for Bosun, it is an industry seniority designation. PDSD (Proficiency in Designated Security Duties) is mandatory for all crew on vessels over 500 GT. The Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) certificate, if completed at this stage, satisfies the 18-month pre-CoC holding requirement for the OOW application later.
Sea time: approximately 2 years typical (industry norm, not MCA statutory)The first MCA Certificate of Competency. The path to OOW runs: RYA Day Skipper theory, then RYA Coastal Skipper practical and theory, then either RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore exam. Per MSN 1858 Amendment 2 Section 3.3(b), both Yachtmaster Coastal (accompanied by a Coastal Skipper practical certificate) and Yachtmaster Offshore are accepted OOW prerequisites. You must also hold EDH for at least 18 months before your CoC application. Then: MCA SQA written examinations (navigation, stability) and an MCA oral examination.
Sea time: 365 days total, 250 seagoing on vessels 15m+ · plus 12 months on 24m+ OR 6 months on 500 GT+ · minimum age 19 (per MSN 1858 A2 §3.3)No additional sea time is required beyond holding the OOW CoC, Chief Mate is qualification-gated, not sea-time-gated (per MSN 1858 A2 §3.4). The key additional requirements are RYA Yachtmaster Ocean (theory and practical) and completing nine academic modules at an MCA-approved nautical college. Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) and Medical First Aid (MEFA) are required at Chief Mate level for the first time, they are not required at OOW level.
Sea time: no additional requirement beyond OOW CoC (can apply simultaneously with OOW per MSN 1858 A2 §6.10)Command of commercial yachts up to 500 GT. Requires 12 months of seagoing service as an OOW with at least 120 days watchkeeping on vessels 15m or more in length (per MSN 1858 A2 §3.5). This is often the first command qualification sought by officers working on smaller superyachts.
Sea time: 12 months as OOW + 120 days watchkeeping on 15m+ (MSN 1858 A2 §3.5)Command of commercial yachts up to 3,000 GT, covering the vast majority of the superyacht fleet. Requires 24 months of seagoing service as an OOW with at least 240 days watchkeeping, including 12 months on vessels 24m or more OR 6 months on vessels 500 GT or more (per MSN 1858 A2 §3.6). This is the primary target qualification for most career yacht officers.
Sea time: 24 months as OOW + 240 days watchkeeping; 12 months on 24m+ OR 6 months on 500 GT+ (MSN 1858 A2 §3.6)The MCA launched the Yacht Unlimited CoC on 18 May 2026 (MSN 1858 A2 Section 4). It allows command of yachts of any size, including above 3,000 GT, without requiring cargo vessel sea time. Two routes to Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited: (A) hold Master Yachts under 3,000 GT, or (B) hold OOW Unlimited plus 12 months as OOW with at least 6 months seagoing on 500 GT or more, plus NAEST(M). This does not grant unlimited status on cargo or other SOLAS vessel types.
New route, see MSN 1858 A2 Section 4.3 and 4.4 for full sea-time detailsRYA vs MCA, the important distinction: the RYA qualifications (Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster) are competency-based assessments that demonstrate practical ability. The MCA Certificates of Competency (OOW, Chief Mate, Master) are the formal professional licences required to serve commercially. You need the relevant RYA qualification to access the MCA CoC, they are sequential, not alternatives.
Cross-department sea time: the important note
Sea time accumulated in a deck role on a qualifying vessel always counts toward MCA requirements, regardless of which specific yacht you are on. The key conditions are vessel size (15m minimum for most sea time to count) and your role (watchkeeping positions may have additional requirements at certain stages). Keep a clear record of every day at sea with the vessel name, GT, your role, and the master's signature. Retrospective reconstruction is possible but difficult.
PDSD and vessel-size endorsements
Several STCW endorsements apply across all departments on larger yachts and are not captured in the core deck ladder above:
- PDSD (Proficiency in Designated Security Duties), required for all crew on vessels over 500 GT. No expiry. Complete this as early as possible in your career if you intend to work on larger vessels.
- Crowd Management, required on vessels carrying 12 or more passengers.
- Crisis Management and Human Behaviour, required for senior crew with muster responsibilities on passenger-carrying yachts.
How much do yacht deck crew earn?
Deck pay rises steeply with vessel size and rank. As a guide:
| Role | Indicative monthly pay |
|---|---|
| Junior deckhand | €2,500 to €3,500 |
| Bosun | €3,500 to €5,500 |
| Officer of the Watch (Mate) | €3,500 to €7,500 |
| Chief Officer | €5,500 to €12,000 |
| Captain | €6,000 to €25,000+ |
Indicative monthly ranges in euros, the industry standard currency. Pay scales with vessel size, rotation and flag, and excludes tips and bonuses. Figures are blended from published 2026 yacht crew salary guides (YPI Crew, Foreland Marine and others); always confirm current rates before relying on them.

Frequently asked questions
What certificates do I need to become a yacht OOW?
STCW BST, ENG1, PSCRB, GMDSS GOC, ECDIS Generic, EDH (held 18 months before application), and HELM Operational. Plus an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore CoC as prerequisite. You must also pass MCA written and oral examinations and meet the sea-time requirements in MSN 1858 Amendment 2. Find training providers for all of these in the Training Directory.
Can Yachtmaster Coastal be used for the MCA OOW?
Yes. MSN 1858 Amendment 2 Section 3.3(b) lists RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (with a Coastal Skipper practical certificate) as an accepted OOW prerequisite. Training providers confirm this is accepted where the candidate lacks the offshore mileage for Yachtmaster Offshore.
Do I need Advanced Fire Fighting for the OOW?
No. Advanced Fire Fighting is first required at Chief Mate level, per MSN 1858 Amendment 2 Section 6.2 Table 1. It is not an OOW requirement. This is a common misconception from older guidance.
What is the new Yacht Unlimited CoC?
Launched 18 May 2026, the Yacht Unlimited Certificate of Competency allows experienced yacht Masters to command yachts of any size without completing cargo vessel sea time. It is governed by MSN 1858 Amendment 2 Section 4. It does not grant command on SOLAS cargo vessels.
How long does it take to become a yacht captain?
From green crew to Master under 3,000 GT typically takes 8 to 15 years depending on how quickly you accumulate sea time and complete each qualification. The OOW application alone requires at least 365 days qualifying sea time. Master under 3,000 GT requires 24 months as an OOW after that. Every stage involves passing MCA written and oral examinations.
