What is STCW?
STCW stands for the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers — an international convention adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 1978 and substantially updated in 2010 (the Manila Amendments). It sets the minimum safety training, certification, and watchkeeping standards required of professional seafarers worldwide.
For most yacht crew, STCW is the first hurdle to clear. Without it, you cannot legally work on a commercial vessel of 500 gross tonnes (GT) or more under most flag states. In practice, even smaller charter yachts now ask for it as a baseline because it demonstrates to captains, owners, and insurers that you have the fundamental safety knowledge to be on board.
STCW is issued by the flag state of the vessel you work on — in the UK that means the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The underlying certificates are internationally recognised, so completing your training with an MCA-approved centre means your STCW is valid on vessels flagged in the UK, Cayman Islands, Marshall Islands, Malta, and most other major yacht-registry flag states.

What is STCW Basic Safety Training (BST)?
STCW Basic Safety Training is the entry-level package of four mandatory modules that every crew member must complete. It is sometimes written as STCW BST or simply "the four STCW modules". The modules are:
Personal Survival Techniques
Abandoning ship, survival craft operation, lifebuoys, survival in the water.
Fire Prevention & Firefighting
Fire triangle, extinguisher types, breathing apparatus, fire-drill command.
Elementary First Aid
CPR, treating injuries, shock, hypothermia, and burns at sea.
Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities
Watchkeeping, emergency procedures, drug and alcohol policy, crew teamwork.
Most providers deliver all four modules as a single four-day block course, running Monday to Thursday or similar. You will spend roughly equal time in the classroom and doing practical drills — fire drills with real extinguishers, survival-craft launches in a pool, and hands-on CPR assessments. Assessment is continuous rather than a single end exam.
Some providers also offer a fifth module — Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB) — as an add-on during the same week. This is required for crew on vessels over 500GT operating internationally and is worth completing at the same time rather than returning for a separate course.
Who needs STCW and when does it apply?
Under SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and the MLC (Maritime Labour Convention), STCW BST is mandatory for all crew serving commercially on vessels of 500 GT or more. For smaller commercial yachts — under the UK's Code of Practice (the Workboat Code or MCA's Small Commercial Vessel codes) — the specific requirement depends on the vessel's area of operation and flag, but the vast majority of professional charter and private yachts now require it.
In practice, if you are applying for paid yacht crew positions anywhere in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, or Pacific, you need STCW before you start. Captains will ask for it on your CV and will check the issue date and expiry before you set foot on board.
Recreational sailors who never work commercially do not need STCW. It is a professional seafarer requirement, not a sailing competence qualification.
How long does STCW take to complete?
The standard STCW BST course runs for four days. Most providers run Monday to Thursday. Some run over five days to allow more practical time or to include the PSCRB module. There are no weeks-long study commitments or self-directed units outside the course itself — you attend, you complete the practical assessments, and you leave with your certificates.
The certificates themselves are issued within a few days of completing the course. The MCA processes certificates centrally, and some centres will give you a provisional certificate immediately upon completion, with the formal MCA-issued document following by post within a few weeks.
How much does STCW cost in the UK?
In the UK, expect to pay £400–£700 for a full four-module BST course. Prices vary by:
- Location — centres in maritime hubs (Southampton, Plymouth, Falmouth) tend to be at the lower end; centres in or near London are typically higher. Antibes-based centres catering to the pre-season rush can be slightly higher again.
- Residential vs. commuter — some centres include accommodation; most do not, so factor in hotel or hostel costs if travelling.
- Module bundling — adding PSCRB or a crowd management module will increase the total price.
The cost of STCW is a one-time investment valid for five years. It is not optional — it is the admission ticket to professional yachting, and every captain and crew agency in the industry expects to see it.
Finding an approved STCW training centre
Your STCW training must be completed at an MCA-approved centre. The MCA maintains an official list of approved providers on its website at gov.uk/mca. Well-established UK providers include Warsash Maritime Academy in Southampton, Sea Safety Training, and various RYA-recognised centres around the coast.
You can also browse STCW-approved training centres directly on YachtSync — the training directory lists courses by location, date, and price so you can find one that fits your schedule before the season starts.

When choosing a provider, check:
- It is on the MCA approved-provider list (ask the centre for their approval reference number)
- The course covers all four BST modules
- The dates work around any visa, travel, or employment requirements you have
- Accommodation is included or there are affordable options nearby
STCW validity and renewal
Your STCW BST certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue. Before it expires — not after — you must complete a refresher course to renew it. Letting your STCW lapse means you cannot legally serve on a commercial vessel until you renew, and it is a red flag on any CV or crew-agency profile.
The refresher course is typically one to two days, not the full four days. It covers updates to the convention, new equipment, and a re-assessment of practical skills. Many providers offer the refresher at a reduced cost compared to the initial course.
Set a renewal reminder at least three months before your expiry date. YachtSync does this automatically once you add your STCW certificate — the app will notify you in advance so you have time to book a course without it becoming urgent.

What comes after STCW BST?
STCW BST gets you through the door. The certificates you add on top of it depend on which department you work in and where you want to progress. Deck crew typically progress through RYA Powerboat Level 2 and eventually the Yachtmaster qualification and MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency. Interior crew focus on PDSD, crowd and crisis management modules, and hospitality training. Engineering crew follow a separate certification pathway through the Y4, Y3, Y2 engineer certificates.

You should also get your ENG1 seafarer medical certificate at the same time as your STCW, if you haven't already. Most captains and agencies require both before considering you for a position.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need STCW for day sailing?
No. STCW is a professional seafarer requirement and applies to crew working commercially on vessels of 500 GT or more, or on domestic commercial yachts where the flag state mandates it. Recreational day sailing on privately-operated boats does not require STCW. That said, many professional roles on smaller commercial yachts now ask for it as a baseline even where it is not strictly required by law.
How long does STCW take?
STCW Basic Safety Training is typically a four-day residential or commuter course covering all four mandatory modules: PST, FPFF, EFA, and PSSR. Some providers spread this across five days or offer an extended version that includes the PSCRB module. There is no additional study time required outside the course days.
Can I do STCW online?
Not entirely. Some providers offer blended learning where the theoretical elements are completed online before a shorter in-person practical session. However, STCW BST cannot be completed purely online — the practical assessments (fire drills, survival craft drills, CPR) must be done in person at an MCA-approved centre.
How much does STCW cost in the UK?
Expect to pay between £400 and £700 for a full four-module BST course in the UK, depending on the provider, location, and whether accommodation is included. Always confirm your provider is MCA-approved before booking. The certificate is valid for five years, making it roughly £80–£140 per year — the cheapest requirement in professional yachting.
