The classroom theory behind Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster.
RYA Shorebased courses are the classroom theory side of the RYA sail pathway, covering navigation, seamanship, meteorology and passage planning from Day Skipper through Coastal Skipper to Yachtmaster theory. They're taught alongside the practical, on-the-water courses and exams. Here are RYA Training Centres running the shorebased syllabus in the main crew hubs.

I haven't done a stand-alone RYA Shorebased course myself, my own Yachtmaster and OOW theory came through BH Marine Academy's training rather than a separate Day Skipper or Coastal course. So I won't pretend to have sat through this specific syllabus at one of these schools.
If you're comparing shorebased providers, these are the practical things worth checking:
Those are the basics. For what the syllabus itself actually covers at each level, see the FAQs below.
RYA Shorebased is the classroom theory syllabus behind the RYA sail qualifications, covering navigation, seamanship, meteorology and passage planning, taught separately from the practical on-the-water courses.
Yes. The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical exam assumes the Yachtmaster theory (or equivalent) has been completed, alongside the required sea miles.
Some schools offer a blended or online-taught version of the shorebased theory, though many crew still prefer in-person classroom teaching, especially for the more advanced Yachtmaster theory.
