Start with the MCA list
For a UK Unlimited deck certificate (OOW Unlimited and up), the education and training has to be MCA-approved, and on the experienced seafarer route MSN 1856 tells you to apply to an MCA-approved nautical college. The MCA publishes the list of approved nautical colleges, last updated on 30 January 2026. The UK colleges on it are:
- Blackpool and The Fylde College (Fleetwood Nautical Campus)
- City of Glasgow College
- East Coast College (Lowestoft), and the University of West London delivering with East Coast College
- Scottish Maritime Academy, at North East Scotland College (Peterhead)
- Tyne Coast College (South Shields Marine School)
- University of the Highlands and Islands, Shetland
- Warsash Maritime Academy (Solent University)
Not sure which route you need yet? Read OOW Unlimited routes: yacht vs commercial first. It explains the cadetship, the experienced seafarer route and the newer Yacht Unlimited certificate.
Programme details below come from each college's own website, read on 13 Oct 2026. Where we could not confirm a detail, we say so rather than guess. Courses, fees and intakes change, so check with the college before you apply. YachtSync has no commercial arrangement with any college on this page.

Also on the MCA list
University of the Highlands and Islands, Shetland (Scalloway) is an MCA-approved nautical college. It is not in our directory yet and we have not checked its programmes. Official website ↗
Not on the MCA list
Liverpool John Moores University's Maritime Centre appears in our directory, but it is not on the MCA's list of approved nautical colleges, so it is not an option for an MCA-approved OOW Unlimited cadetship. The University of Plymouth was removed from the list in January 2026. UHI North Highland and Orkney are not on it either.
How to choose
There is no single best college. The right one depends on your route and your circumstances. Questions worth asking:
- Which route are you on? Cadets usually apply through a sponsor, and the sponsor may decide or limit the college. Experienced seafarers apply to the college directly.
- Does the college run exactly the course you need? The experienced seafarer route, a conversion from OOW (Yachts), and a superyacht-sector variant are not always the same course.
- What is included in the fee? Check which short courses (ECDIS, NAEST, EDH, HELM) are included and which cost extra, and whether exam fees are on top.
- When does it start, and how is it delivered? Intake dates, course length and whether there is a blended or online option matter if you are working rotations.
- Where is it? Travel and accommodation for a course of several months are a real cost.
- Is it still on the MCA list? The list changes. Check the current version before you commit.

Frequently asked questions
Which UK colleges are MCA approved for deck officer training?
The MCA's list of approved nautical colleges, last updated 30 January 2026, names Blackpool and The Fylde College (Fleetwood), City of Glasgow College, East Coast College (Lowestoft), the University of West London with East Coast College, the Scottish Maritime Academy at North East Scotland College (Peterhead), Tyne Coast College (South Shields), the University of the Highlands and Islands Shetland, and Warsash Maritime Academy.
Do I apply to the college or a sponsor for a deck cadetship?
Usually the sponsor. Warsash tells applicants to apply direct to sponsoring companies, and City of Glasgow College says applications should be made through a sponsoring company. On the experienced seafarer route there is no sponsor: you apply to an MCA-approved nautical college for a place on the course.
Is Liverpool John Moores University an MCA approved nautical college?
No. LJMU is not on the MCA's list of approved nautical colleges (last updated 30 January 2026), so it is not an option for an MCA-approved OOW Unlimited cadetship. The University of Plymouth was removed from the list in January 2026.
