The minimum qualification required to legally operate a marine VHF radio — including DSC emergency alerting — on any non-SOLAS vessel.
The Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum legal qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment — including fixed and handheld sets fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) — on any non-SOLAS vessel in the UK. DSC is the digital emergency alerting layer built into all modern marine VHF radios, and operators must be trained in its use before transmitting. In the UK, the RYA manages SRC training and assessment on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
The certification framework derives from the IMO GMDSS system (part of the SOLAS Convention), implemented through ITU Radio Regulations Article S47 and the European CEPT/ERC/REC 31-04 harmonised examination procedures for non-SOLAS vessels. The SRC is internationally recognised across CEPT member states and widely accepted in the USA, Caribbean, and elsewhere — making it a genuinely portable qualification for any seafarer working internationally.
Note that the SRC is an operator competency credential; a separate vessel credential is also required. The vessel must hold a Ship Station Licence (issued by Ofcom in the UK, free online) before a radio may legally be used at sea. Both credentials — operator certificate and vessel licence — are required.
The SRC is held as standard by virtually all recreational sailors, motor boaters, charter crew, and superyacht crew operating in coastal waters. It is a prerequisite in practice for anyone sitting the RYA Yachtmaster practical exam, where examiners will assess radio procedure. Those moving onto offshore or ocean passages — including superyacht crew heading across the Atlantic or into the Indian Ocean — should progress to the LRC, which builds directly on the SRC syllabus. Professional mariners transitioning to SOLAS commercial vessels will need to look at the ROC or GOC, which are governed separately by the MCA.
