The navigational backbone of the RYA cruising scheme — shore-based theory courses covering coastal and offshore navigation at three progressive levels, leading to MCA-recognised Certificates of Competence.
The RYA Shorebased theory courses are non-practical, classroom or online qualifications designed and administered entirely by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) — the UK's national authority for recreational and small commercial vessels. Three levels sit within this grouping: Day Skipper Shorebased, and Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased (a single combined course covering both levels). Each requires a minimum of 40 hours of structured learning and is assessed by written examination.
The Day Skipper theory course covers nautical terms, chartwork, position fixing, tidal theory and streams, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS/COLREGS), meteorology, safety equipment and procedures, passage planning, and pilotage. It is open to complete novices and is the gateway into the structured RYA progression pathway. The Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory builds directly on Day Skipper content to add advanced navigation, secondary port tidal calculations, navigation in restricted visibility, offshore and night passage planning, advanced meteorology, and in-depth COLREGS application.
Neither course is a regulatory requirement under STCW or IMO conventions for the vessels recreational sailors typically operate. However, the RYA is recognised by the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) for issuing Certificates of Competence, and the shorebased theory certificates are the implicit prerequisite for gaining entry to the practical courses that lead to those MCA-recognised qualifications. Training centres will not enrol candidates on Yachtmaster-level practical courses without the relevant theory certificate.
The Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (requiring 50 days sea time, 5 days as skipper, 2,500 miles, and 5 qualifying night passages) can be commercially endorsed by the MCA, permitting the holder to work as skipper or crew on British-flagged commercial vessels under 24 metres. Beyond that, the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased course (celestial navigation theory, approximately 40 hours) and a qualifying 600 nm+ ocean passage lead to the Yachtmaster Ocean qualification. The RYA shorebased theory courses are the essential first step in this entire pathway.
