RYA-certified qualifications for operating personal watercraft (jet skis) and yacht tenders — the deck-crew standard for superyacht watersports and guest transfers.
PWC/RIB training in the superyacht sector covers two closely linked Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications that are nearly always taken together or in sequence. The RYA Personal Watercraft (PWC) Proficiency Certificate is a one-day practical course covering the safe and lawful operation of jet skis — including weather assessment, launching, craft handling, falls-overboard recovery, emergency procedures, basic navigation and collision regulations. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two-day foundational RIB and tender qualification covering boat handling, safety, navigation and COLREGs for powerboats up to 10 m. Both are designed, administered and certificated by the RYA — the national body for boating in the UK, recognised by the MCA.
For professional deck crew, the natural progression beyond Powerboat Level 2 is the RYA Tender Operator Certificate — a two-day course (including a night exercise) developed jointly by the RYA and the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) specifically for crew who drive guests between an anchored superyacht and shore. The Tender Operator qualification is referenced in the PYA Superyacht Watersports Code of Practice (2015) as the expected standard for professional tender pilots, and is increasingly required by yacht management companies as a condition of employment in deck roles involving passenger-carrying tender duties.
Neither the PWC nor the RIB/Tender qualifications are STCW or IMO-mandated in the same way that Basic Safety Training is, but the industry norm — enforced by flag states, management companies and insurers — treats them as required for deck crew undertaking the relevant watersports and tender duties. Many UK harbours and marinas additionally require evidence of formal PWC training before permitting jet-ski use in their waters.
Holding RYA Powerboat Level 2 and the Tender Operator Certificate is the baseline expectation for any superyacht deckhand applying for a vessel with water toys or at-anchor tender operations. It directly supports roles from junior deckhand through bosun, where responsibility for managing guest watersports and safe tender transfers is a core duty. Crew who go on to complete the RYA PWC Instructor qualification (which requires the PWC Proficiency as a prerequisite) can run guest briefings and on-water instruction aboard large charter yachts, adding a premium watersports-management skill set to their CV.
All three certificates — the RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate, the RYA National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) and the RYA Powerboat Tender Operator Certificate — are valid for life with no expiry date and no renewal requirement. This follows the standard RYA pattern for practical proficiency awards. The separate RYA Commercial Endorsement, which is required to operate PWC or powerboats on a paid/professional basis, is a separate endorsement applied to the relevant RYA qualification; the 2026 RYA fee for this endorsement is £49. If you intend to operate internationally, the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) can be applied for using the RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate as supporting evidence. Note: the RYA PWC Instructor credential (separate from the crew proficiency certificate) has a 5-year validity and requires revalidation — but this applies only to the instructor qualification, not to the crew proficiency certificate itself.
