A five-day executive CPD workshop combining maritime economics, international law, green shipping, and corporate governance — delivered by LJMU Maritime Centre in Liverpool.
Mastering Maritime Law and Business Management (MMLBM) is a five-day intensive continuing professional development workshop run by the LJMU Maritime Centre at Liverpool John Moores University. LJMU describes it as "a globally unique educational CPD experience" that combines academic theory with real-world application. It forms part of LJMU's executive "Mastering Maritime" series — which also includes programmes on port management, cyber security, energy efficiency, and shipbuilding management. Delivery is face-to-face at the James Parsons Building, 3 Byrom Street, Liverpool L3 3AF, with content led by LJMU academics and invited industry subject-matter experts through expert-led lectures and knowledge-sharing discussions. Daily tea, coffee, and lunches are included in the fee; accommodation is not.
The programme covers a broad range of strategic and legal topics relevant to maritime managers and shore-based professionals: maritime economics and ship finance, international maritime law and environmental law, shipowners' liabilities (including in the context of unmanned and autonomous ships), zero-carbon maritime transport and green shipping corridors, corporate social responsibility and business ethics, commercial risk analysis and leadership, and corporate governance and regulatory compliance. The course reflects the industry's evolving agenda — from IMO GHG strategy and CII regulations through to the commercial and human implications of increasing vessel automation. The next confirmed cohort runs 13–17 July 2026.
This is not an MCA Certificate of Competency, an STCW certification, or an RYA qualification. It carries no statutory requirement under any IMO Convention and is not mandated for any seafarer licence or flag-state endorsement. It is a voluntary university CPD programme aimed at maritime professionals who wish to develop managerial, legal, and strategic knowledge beyond their operational qualifications. The credential issued on completion is a university CPD certificate from LJMU, suitable for professional portfolios, employer CPD records, and self-directed CPD logs with bodies such as the Nautical Institute, IMarEST, or CILT.
This course does not sit within a statutory progression ladder — it is a lateral professional development programme. It is suited to maritime executives, shipowners and operators, maritime lawyers and legal advisors, port and harbour authority officials, logistics and supply chain managers, marine insurance professionals, classification society representatives, shipyard and drydock officials, government and regulatory officials, sustainability officers, financial analysts, and naval architects or marine engineers seeking business and legal context. It is particularly valuable for sea-going professionals transitioning into shore-based management, legal, or advisory careers, as well as established shore-side professionals who want structured exposure to the full breadth of maritime law and commercial risk.
