HND/FdSc Nautical Science
(officer cadet — Foundation Degree route)

The UK Merchant Navy deck officer cadetship qualification — a sponsored three-year programme combining college study and sea phases leading to the MCA Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.

~3 Years Sponsor-funded Level 5 — HND or FdSc CoC Validity: 5 Years

Course Overview

The HND (Higher National Diploma) and FdSc (Foundation Degree in Science) in Nautical Science are the two standard UK academic qualifications awarded on completion of a Merchant Navy deck officer cadetship. Both are Level 5 qualifications; the key distinction is that the FdSc provides a direct articulation route into a BSc (Hons) top-up degree (one further year of study), while the HND is a vocational award that carries full academic exemptions toward Chief Mate and Master level SQA examinations when passed to the required standard. For all practical purposes at the point of entering watchkeeping duties, the two awards are equivalent.

The programme is governed by the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency), which sets the Certificate of Competency requirements and approves training programmes, and by the MNTB (Merchant Navy Training Board), which approves the cadetship structure and the Training Record Book (TRB) that cadets complete at sea. The international regulatory basis is STCW Convention Regulation II/1 (Officer of the Watch, Unlimited), implemented in the UK via the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Regulations. Graduates of MNTB-approved programmes are exempt from the SQA written examinations in Navigation & Stability and Operations — a significant benefit of the cadet route compared with alternative pathways.

Study is structured across approximately five alternating phases: periods at the maritime college covering navigation, stability, ship operations, meteorology, cargo handling, maritime law, and all mandatory STCW safety training (including PSCRB, Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid, and GMDSS), interspersed with seagoing phases aboard merchant vessels. Cadets must accumulate a minimum of 12 months' approved seagoing service, including at least 6 months of bridge watchkeeping duties, and complete the MNTB Training Record Book throughout. Enrolment requires sponsorship from a shipping company or approved training provider — independent self-funded enrolment is not available on this route.

  • Secured sponsorship from a shipping company or cadet training provider
  • FdSc route: minimum 54 UCAS tariff points
  • HND route: four GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C) including Maths, a Science (with physical science content), and English
  • Valid ENG1 medical certificate — normal colour vision required for deck officers
  • IELTS 5.5 or equivalent for non-native English speakers
  • No prior sea service required at entry

Career Progression

BEFORE
Sponsored Cadetship Offer (+ Optional Level 3 Pre-Cadetship)
A confirmed sponsorship from a shipping company or training provider is required before enrolment. Candidates who do not yet meet academic entry requirements may first complete a Level 3 Preparation for Cadet Training programme (offered by several UK maritime colleges) to build academic and sponsor-readiness before applying for a cadetship.
THIS COURSE
HND/FdSc Nautical Science (officer cadet — Foundation Degree route)
A three-year MNTB-approved programme delivered across five alternating college and sea phases. On successful completion, graduates hold a Level 5 academic award and are eligible to apply to the MCA for the Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency (STCW Regulation II/1) following MCA Oral Examination C.
NEXT STEP
OOW Unlimited CoC → Chief Mate → Master (Unlimited)
After gaining sea service as OOW, officers progress to the Chief Mate (Unlimited) CoC (STCW II/2) via an approved academic programme and further sea service, and ultimately to Master (Unlimited). FdSc graduates may also top up to a BSc (Hons) Nautical Science with one further year of study.

Completion of the HND/FdSc and the subsequent MCA Oral Examination C leads to the Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency — the legal licence to stand bridge watch on merchant ships of any size in any trade area. This opens roles as a navigating watchkeeper across all sectors of the merchant fleet, including bulk carriers, container ships, tankers, offshore support vessels, ro-ro ferries, and passenger ships. HND graduates who achieve the required pass grades receive full academic exemptions toward Chief Mate and Master level SQA written examinations, accelerating the progression to command. Shore-based career options available to qualified officers include fleet operations, harbour authority pilotage, MCA marine surveying, maritime lecturing, and port management.

Renewal and revalidation: The HND or FdSc academic qualification itself does not expire. However, the MCA Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency that the programme leads to has a 5-year validity (MCA began issuing 5-year certificates from January 2021). Revalidation every 5 years requires evidence of sufficient sea service or maritime occupation within the preceding 5 years, a valid ENG1 medical certificate, and evidence of completed MCA-approved refresher training for the mandatory STCW safety elements (in particular STCW VI/1-1 Personal Survival Techniques, VI/3 Advanced Fire Fighting, and VI/2-1 Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats). Application is made via MCA form MSF 4201 (Revalidation) to the Seafarer Training and Certification Branch. Note that the underlying STCW mandatory safety certificates each carry their own 5-year validity and must be refreshed independently of the CoC revalidation.
