STCW MCA MNTB Approved Career Advancement

BSc/MSc Maritime degrees
(officer cadet pathways)

Full academic degree programmes combining university study with MCA-approved sea service — the structured degree route to becoming a certificated Merchant Navy deck or engineering officer.

BSc: 3 years MSc: 1–2 years Issuing body: MCA CoC validity: 5 years

Course Overview

BSc and MSc maritime degrees on officer cadet pathways are full academic university programmes running in parallel with the practical requirements to obtain a UK MCA Certificate of Competency (CoC). The most common undergraduate route is a BSc (Hons) in Nautical Science for deck and navigation officers, or a BEng/MEng in Marine and Mechanical Engineering for engineering officers. Programmes are approved by both the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) and the MNTB (Merchant Navy Training Board), and are designed to meet the international STCW Convention (1978, as amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments) requirements for officer certification. The academic qualification provides exemption from the SQA written examinations that would otherwise be required to obtain a CoC.

The undergraduate degree is specifically structured as a Merchant Navy cadetship, alternating between periods of academic study at a maritime college or university and sea service aboard approved vessels across five phases over three years. Since September 2025, all UK officer cadet programmes follow the updated syllabus developed under the MCA's Cadet Training and Modernisation (CT&M) Programme, refreshing content to reflect modern vessel technology, navigation systems, and human element skills.

Postgraduate MSc programmes — covering areas such as Maritime Operations Management, Maritime Energy Efficiency, and Port Management — are career-advancement qualifications typically taken by qualified officers seeking senior management or shore-based roles. These do not directly confer a CoC but may carry professional body exemptions; for example, LJMU's MSc Maritime Operations Management carries exemptions from Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) chartered membership examinations.

Programme Structure — BSc (Hons) Cadetship (five phases)

Prerequisites

  • Age: minimum 16 at programme start; must be 18 before first sea phase (MCA requirement)
  • Typically 60–120 UCAS points (varies by institution)
  • GCSEs (grades 4–5+) in Mathematics, English, and a Science subject with physical science content
  • Valid ENG1 medical fitness certificate required before sea phases
  • Normal colour vision required for deck/navigation cadets
  • IELTS 5.5 minimum for non-native English speakers (BSc); IELTS 6.0–6.5 for MSc
  • Cadetship sponsor typically required (self-funded routes are available but less common)
  • For MSc: a relevant undergraduate degree and typically relevant sea-going or professional experience
  • No prior maritime certificates required to begin the undergraduate cadet degree

What You'll Achieve

  • BSc (Hons) Nautical Science or BEng/MEng Marine and Mechanical Engineering academic qualification — a lifetime qualification
  • Approximately 12 months total qualifying sea service meeting STCW A-II/1 requirements
  • All mandatory STCW Basic Safety training delivered in-programme (PSSR, Fire Fighting, First Aid, Basic Safety)
  • GMDSS Signals Certificate
  • SQA written examination exemptions toward the relevant MCA Certificate of Competency
  • Eligibility to apply to the MCA for the Deck Officer of the Watch (OOW) Unlimited CoC or the Engineering Officer of the Watch CoC on completion
  • MSc: management-level expertise; potential ICS chartered membership exam exemptions (LJMU Maritime Operations Management)

Career Progression

BEFORE
No prior maritime certificates required
The undergraduate cadet degree is an entry-level route into the Merchant Navy. Applicants need appropriate academic qualifications (UCAS points, GCSEs in Maths, English, Science), a valid ENG1 medical certificate, and typically a cadetship sponsor. No prior STCW certificates are required — mandatory safety training is delivered within the programme. For the MSc, a relevant undergraduate degree and professional or sea-going experience are typically expected.
THIS COURSE
BSc/MSc Maritime degrees (officer cadet pathways)
A 3-year MCA and MNTB-approved cadetship combining university academic study with approximately 12 months of qualifying sea service. On completion, graduates are eligible to apply to the MCA for the Deck Officer of the Watch (OOW) Unlimited Certificate of Competency (STCW regulation II/1) or the Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) CoC for engineering cadets.
NEXT STEP
Third/Second Officer → Chief Mate CoC → Master Unlimited CoC
Holders of the OOW CoC serve as Third or Second Officer. After approximately 18 months of watchkeeping service plus further approved training and MCA oral examination, they may progress to Chief Mate CoC (STCW II/2). Master Unlimited CoC follows after 36 months of qualifying service (reducible to 24 months if at least 12 months served as Chief Mate). Engineering officers follow an equivalent EOOW to Second Engineer to Chief Engineer progression.

The OOW Certificate of Competency qualifies the holder to serve as Third or Second Officer on vessels of any size in any waters worldwide. For engineering cadets, the EOOW CoC opens the same global career track on the engineering ladder. MSc graduates most commonly move into maritime management, shipping consultancy, port management, marine insurance, ship broking, fleet superintendent, and marine surveying roles ashore. Senior management positions in ship management companies and classification societies are typical long-term destinations.

Certificate of Competency — Revalidation (every 5 years)

The MCA Certificate of Competency obtained on completing the degree pathway must be revalidated every 5 years. The degree itself (BSc or MSc) is a lifetime academic qualification and does not expire.

To revalidate, the CoC holder must demonstrate either 12 months of qualifying seagoing service in the preceding 5 years, or 3 months of seagoing service in the 6 months immediately before revalidation. Evidence of MCA-approved updating training within the previous 5 years is also required, including:

  • STCW mandatory safety training refreshers (Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, Advanced Fire Fighting as applicable)
  • ECDIS simulator training course (IMO Model Course 1.27) for deck officers
  • Any vessel-specific endorsements as applicable (for example, High Voltage systems certificate)

Revalidation applications may be submitted up to 6 months before CoC expiry. If submitted 6 months or more ahead of expiry, the new 5-year period runs from the revalidation date rather than the anniversary date.

Sponsorship and Funding

The vast majority of UK cadets on the undergraduate route are fully sponsored by a shipping or maritime training company, which covers all tuition fees, mandatory safety training course costs, uniform, and pays a living allowance throughout the programme. Self-funded routes are available — particularly for international students — where fees at some institutions may reach £15,000–£25,000 per year. For 2026–27 entry, the UK regulated annual tuition fee cap for home students is £9,790 (rising to £10,050 for 2027–28 entry). Fleetwood Nautical Campus lists its BSc (Hons) Nautical Science at £7,624/year for the 2026–27 intake.
