The UK's primary degree-level entry route into the Merchant Navy as a deck officer — an integrated three-year cadetship combining academic study with sponsored sea service, leading to the MCA Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency.
The BSc (Hons) Nautical Science is a full-time, three-year integrated degree programme that combines academic study with sponsored sea service as part of a Merchant Navy cadetship. It is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB), and is aligned with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW 1978, as amended). This is a professional Merchant Navy qualification — not an RYA pathway — and it is the most common degree-level route for those seeking the MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency.
The programme is structured across five alternating phases of college study and sea service, totalling approximately 12 months of approved seagoing experience across the cadetship. Academic content covers navigation and bridge watchkeeping, celestial navigation, marine cargo operations, GMDSS communications, maritime law and regulations, ship stability, meteorology, and a final dissertation. STCW Basic Safety Training — encompassing fire fighting, personal survival, first aid, and personal safety and social responsibility — is also completed as part of the programme.
This course is aimed at people entering the Merchant Navy as deck officer cadets — typically school leavers or graduates seeking a career as a navigating officer on commercial vessels including cargo ships, tankers, cruise ships, offshore support vessels, and ferries. Crucially, applicants must secure company sponsorship before commencing the programme; sponsoring shipping or training companies cover course fees, safety short courses, and a cadet allowance. The MCA OOW Certificate of Competency, which this degree leads to, is a regulatory requirement to serve as a watchkeeping officer on SOLAS vessels internationally under STCW Regulation II/1.
Graduates are eligible for watchkeeping officer roles across all commercial vessel sectors — container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, cruise ships, offshore support vessels, ferries, and more. Shore-based careers become available at any stage of the progression ladder, including ship management, maritime insurance, port operations, marine surveying, maritime education, and VTS (Vessel Traffic Services). A Master Mariner CoC is the highest deck officer qualification and serves as entry to senior management and command roles worldwide.
The BSc degree itself does not expire. However, the MCA Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency that the degree leads to is valid for five years and must be revalidated before expiry to remain in force. This is an ongoing five-year cycle for the duration of a seafarer's career.
Revalidation requires: approved refresher and updating training completed within the previous five years (including Advanced Fire Fighting to STCW Table A-VI/3, and other applicable mandatory courses); evidence of continued sea service or equivalent; and a valid ENG1 medical certificate. Applications are made to the MCA via the online process at gov.uk using form MSF 4201.
The BSc (Hons) Nautical Science is also offered by Warsash Maritime School (Solent University). Provider listings are added as schools are verified and approved in the YachtSync directory. Check back for updates, or visit providers' own websites for the latest intake dates and sponsorship guidance.
