The MCA-approved undergraduate degree cadetship that takes you from school-leaver to qualified Merchant Navy Engineer Officer of the Watch.
The BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering is a full three-year undergraduate honours degree that integrates academic engineering education with structured sea time and vocational training. It is specifically designed for the Merchant Navy officer pathway, taking candidates from school-leaver entry level through to eligibility for the MCA Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate of Competency (CoC). At Fleetwood Nautical Campus (part of Blackpool and The Fylde College), the programme is approved by both the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB), and validated by a UK university partner.
The programme is structured in five phases, alternating between college-based academic study and supervised seagoing placements. Academic content spans marine thermodynamics, propulsion systems (motor and steam), electrical engineering, control engineering, engineering science, naval architecture fundamentals, workshop practice, engineering management, and operations at sea. A total of eight months' sea time is required across the placement phases, carried out on merchant vessels of at least 750 kW propulsion power in engine room watchkeeping or Unmanned Machinery Space (UMS) duties.
The regulatory basis is STCW 1978 as amended (Manila Amendments 2010), specifically STCW Regulation III/1, governing Engineer Officers of the Watch on vessels powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW or more. UK-flagged merchant vessels of this size are required under the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Regulations 2015 (SI 2015/782) to carry certified engineer officers. On successful completion of the degree and fulfilment of MCA sea service requirements, graduates are eligible to apply for the EOOW Unlimited CoC. BEng holders receive full exemptions from the IAMI Engineering Knowledge written examinations (General Engineering Science A and B, and Control Engineering sections); candidates must still pass the MCA oral examination.
Beyond the seagoing officer ladder, a BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering supports a wide range of shore-based and specialist maritime careers: marine surveyor, technical superintendent, fleet manager, harbour master, classification society surveyor, naval architecture support, and academic or teaching positions in maritime education. The degree qualification is registered as a regulated profession pathway under the GOV.UK Regulated Professions Register for Engineer Officer (Operational Level and Management Level).
The BEng degree itself does not expire. However, the MCA Certificate of Competency (CoC) issued upon successful completion and application has a five-year validity period. Under STCW Article I/11 and the Merchant Shipping Regulations, the CoC must be revalidated every five years by demonstrating continued professional competence — either through approved sea service or approved refresher training during the preceding five years, in accordance with STCW Code Section A-I/11 and MCA Merchant Shipping Notice MSN 1861 (M) Amendment 1.
Associated STCW ancillary certificates (including Basic Safety Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft, and Medical First Aid) each carry their own five-year revalidation cycles. A valid ENG1 medical fitness certificate is also required for continued sea service, typically renewed every two years (or annually for seafarers over 65). Revalidation is submitted to the MCA using form MSF 4201 (current revision November 2025) with evidence of service, certificates held, and the prescribed fee.
