Intensive oral examination preparation for the MCA Certificate of Competency as Officer of the Watch on commercially operated yachts and superyachts over 24 metres.
The OOW Yacht (<3000 GT) Orals is the final examination stage for the MCA Certificate of Competency as Officer of the Watch (Yachts less than 3000 GT), governed by STCW Regulation II/1 as applied to the large yacht sector under MCA Marine Surveyor Notice MSN 1858 (M+F). The oral examination itself is conducted face-to-face by an MCA-approved examiner and covers all watchkeeping officer competency areas. Commercial training providers offer dedicated oral preparation courses — typically five to seven intensive days — that simulate the exam environment and systematically revise every subject area the examiner may test.
The oral is the final gate in the OOW (Yachts) certification pathway. Candidates will have already completed a suite of written and practical modules — including Navigation & Radar Theory, General Ship Knowledge, GMDSS, ECDIS and HELM Operational — before applying to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE). The MCA reviews all documentation and takes approximately 28 days to issue the NoE; the oral examination cannot be booked until the NoE is in hand. Application is made on MCA form MSF 4343.
Oral preparation courses drill candidates across the full MCA syllabus: passage planning and position determination, maintaining a safe navigational watch, manoeuvring and shiphandling, response to navigational emergencies (MOB, collision, grounding, flooding), fire and distress response, GMDSS communications, MARPOL pollution prevention, ship stability and seaworthiness, legislative requirements including SOLAS, and meteorology. Online self-study formats with video content and live webinars are also available for candidates who cannot attend in person.
Holding the MCA OOW (Yachts) <3000 GT CoC is a regulatory requirement for any officer standing a navigational watch on a commercially operated large yacht over 24 metres in load line length. It is recognised internationally under the STCW Convention, opening watchkeeping officer berths — typically Second Officer or Third Officer — across the global superyacht fleet. The qualification is the essential first rung on the MCA large-yacht officer ladder, leading upward through Chief Mate and Master ratings toward the MCA Yacht Unlimited CoC pathway announced on GOV.UK.
Revalidation: The MCA OOW (Yachts) <3000 GT Certificate of Competency must be revalidated every five years. Revalidation is an administrative process — not a full re-examination — requiring evidence of qualifying sea service (either 12 months in the preceding 5 years, or 3 months in the preceding 6 months) or 30 months in an accepted marine occupation. A valid ENG1 medical certificate and sea service documentation are required; application is made on MCA form MSF 4201 to the MCA Seafarer Training & Certification Branch, Southampton. Note that ancillary certificates such as GMDSS, ECDIS and STCW Basic Safety Training have their own separate validity periods and renewal requirements that must be maintained independently of CoC revalidation. Candidates are advised to synchronise renewal dates where possible to avoid gaps that could restrict service.
Only verified providers with confirmed course listings are shown. Other providers offering OOW oral preparation in the UK and internationally — including courses in Antibes, Southampton and via online delivery — should be contacted directly to confirm current availability. Always verify that a provider is MCA-approved and that their programme covers the full MSN 1858 syllabus before enrolling.
