Master (Unlimited) CoC prep

Tuition programme preparing deck officers for the MCA Oral Examination A — the gateway to the Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency, authorising command of any commercial vessel worldwide.

Duration: 3–5 weeks (oral prep) Issuing Body: MCA Validity: 5 years (revalidation)

Course Overview

The Master (Unlimited) CoC prep course is a tuition programme designed to prepare experienced deck officers for the MCA Oral Examination A. That oral examination is the gateway assessment that must be passed before the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) issues a Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency. The certificate is issued under STCW Regulation II/2, with UK-specific requirements set out in MSN 1856 (M+F) Amendment 1. It is the highest-grade deck officer certificate in the UK, authorising the holder to serve as Master (Captain) of any commercial vessel of 3,000 GT or more, operating in any waters worldwide with no restriction on vessel size or trading area — hence “unlimited.”

The prep course is not itself a certificate; it prepares candidates for the MCA’s oral examination, which providers typically arrange during the final week of a formal programme. It is aimed at serving Chief Mates who have completed the required sea service and hold all applicable ancillary STCW certificates. The qualification is issued under the same STCW framework (Section A-II/2) that governs Master certification globally, and it is also the recognised route for officers holding foreign CoCs from IMO White List countries who wish to convert to a UK Master Unlimited CoC.

Providers offer the programme in several formats: intensive classroom-based courses of three to five weeks, full examination-route packages combining HND, Chief Mate and Master preparation over approximately five months, and online or modular self-paced options for candidates studying around seagoing commitments. MCA oral examination fees are charged separately by the MCA and are not included in course fees.

Career Progression

Before
Chief Mate Unlimited (STCW II/2) CoC
Required prerequisite. You must hold a valid MCA-accepted Chief Mate Unlimited CoC and have completed the required approved sea service: 36 months’ OOW (II/1) watchkeeping service, reducible to 24 months where at least 12 months was served at Chief Mate level.
This Course
Master (Unlimited) CoC prep
Intensive preparation for the MCA Oral Examination A (STCW II/2). On passing the oral, the MCA issues the Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency — the highest deck officer certificate in the UK, valid for vessels of 3,000 GT or more operating worldwide.
Next Step
Master (Unlimited) — Command and Shore-based Roles
You are now qualified to command any commercial vessel of any size, operating in any waters worldwide. Beyond command at sea, holders commonly progress to Fleet Manager, Marine Superintendent, Harbour Master, Marine Surveyor, Marine Consultant, or MCA Flag State Inspector.

The Master (Unlimited) CoC is the apex of the MCA deck officer certification ladder — there is no higher deck officer certificate above it. Holders are qualified to command large cargo ships, tankers, bulk carriers, container vessels, passenger ships, cruise ships, and very large superyachts. For superyacht officers, the MCA has introduced a Yacht Unlimited CoC pathway allowing Master Yachts-qualified officers a structured route to Unlimited tonnage certification. Shore-based careers built on Master (Unlimited) status include Fleet Manager, Marine Superintendent, Harbour Master (typically requiring a separate local authority appointment), Marine Surveyor, Marine Consultant, and MCA Surveyor or Flag State Inspector.

The Master (Unlimited) CoC does not expire permanently but must be revalidated every five years to remain valid for service. Revalidation requires evidence of at least 12 months’ approved sea service as Master or deck officer on a seagoing vessel of more than 80 GT or 24 m within the preceding five years, together with completion of MCA-approved STCW refresher training. Required refresher certificates include Personal Survival Techniques (A-VI/1-1), Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (A-VI/1-2), and Advanced Fire Fighting (A-VI/3). Where the required sea service cannot be evidenced, a longer refresher course covering both theory and practical elements is required rather than the shorter updating course. Revalidation is an administrative process via MCA form MSF 4201; no further oral examination is required at revalidation, provided sea service and refresher certificates are current.

Cost range shown is indicative for standalone oral prep courses (3–5 weeks). Full examination-route packages (HND + Chief Mate + Master) vary significantly and may cost considerably more. MCA oral examination fees are charged separately and are not included in course fees. Always confirm current fees directly with the provider and the MCA before enrolment.
