Course Overview

The Master 200/500 Orals preparation course is an intensive classroom programme designed to ready candidates for the face-to-face oral examination conducted by a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) examiner. The course covers two closely linked Certificates of Competency (CoC): the Master (Code Vessels) less than 200 GT, which authorises the holder to command commercial vessels — including charter yachts, workboats, expedition vessels, and dive boats operating under the UK Code of Practice — and the Officer of the Watch (Yachts) less than 500 GT, which authorises navigational watchkeeping on yachts up to 500 GT. Because the oral examination syllabi for both certificates overlap significantly, candidates frequently prepare for one or both on the same course.

The prep course itself is not an MCA-approved certificate programme — it is voluntary preparation before sitting the mandatory MCA oral examination, which is conducted face-to-face or via Microsoft Teams. Candidates must first obtain a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) from the MCA before they can book the oral. The Master (Code Vessels) <200 GT CoC is a domestic UK qualification governed by Merchant Shipping legislation; the OOW and Master Yachts <500 GT CoC is issued under STCW Convention Chapter II/2 as applied to yachts. Written examination modules are set by IAMI (Institute of Admiralty and Maritime Instructors) under MCA approval.

Standard courses run for five to six days of intensive classroom preparation, typically concluding with mock oral sessions. Some providers also offer one-to-one bespoke preparation (usually 12–16 hours spread over two to four days) and online self-study routes for candidates who cannot attend in person. The oral examination itself covers IRPCS/COLREGs, passage planning, radar and ARPA, meteorology, emergency response, maritime law and ship's business, GMDSS/distress communications, pollution prevention, and seaworthiness.

Prerequisites (to sit the MCA oral)

  • Minimum age 18; valid ENG1 seafarers' medical certificate
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed) or IYT Master of Yachts Limited
  • 6 months' seagoing service while holding the above certificate
  • STCW Basic Safety Training: FPFF, PSSR, EFA, PST
  • STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)
  • GMDSS Restricted Operators Certificate (ROC) or GOC
  • HELM (O) — Human Element Leadership and Management (Operational)
  • Notice of Eligibility (NoE) issued by the MCA
  • For Unlimited area: additionally RYA Yachtmaster Ocean or IYT Master of Yachts Unlimited, and valid GMDSS GOC

  • Navigational safety and passage planning
  • Radar and ARPA use
  • Chartwork, voyage planning, and position determination
  • Meteorology
  • Emergency response procedures

Career Progression

BEFORE
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed) + sea service + written modules
Candidates must hold RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or IYT Master of Yachts Limited, have accumulated six months' seagoing service, completed STCW Basic Safety Training, HELM (O), and passed the relevant IAMI written examination modules before applying to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility to sit the oral.
THIS COURSE
Master 200/500 Orals Preparation
Five to six days of intensive classroom preparation, covering the full oral examination syllabus for both CoCs. Mock oral sessions allow candidates to practise under examination conditions. Passing the official MCA oral results in the CoC being issued — the prep course itself carries no certificate.
NEXT STEP
Master Yachts <500 GT (STCW II/2) → Master Yachts <3000 GT
With further sea service as a deck officer and additional written examinations (including Celestial Navigation and Stability), holders can progress to Master Yachts <500 GT (STCW Chapter II/2), then — with 24 months' service and 240 days watchkeeping — to Master Yachts <3000 GT, the senior command certificate for superyachts.

Passing the MCA oral opens the door to paid command of UK-flagged commercial vessels. The Master (Code Vessels) <200 GT CoC authorises command of commercial charter yachts, workboats, dive boats, and expedition vessels operating under the UK Code of Practice — a significant step beyond sailing under an RYA commercially endorsed certificate alone. The OOW (Yachts) <500 GT CoC supports progression towards senior deck officer and command roles on larger yachts and superyachts. The full MCA deck officer ladder from this point runs: OOW Yachts <3000 GT (II/1) → Master Yachts <500 GT (II/2) → Master Yachts <3000 GT (II/2).

Revalidation: The MCA Certificate of Competency (Master <200 GT) is valid for five years. Revalidation requires demonstrating continued competency — typically six months' seagoing service on code vessels within the preceding five years, or three months' service in the six months immediately before expiry, or 30 months in an acceptable maritime occupation within the five-year period. The MCA accepts electronic revalidation applications. STCW ancillary certificates (Basic Safety Training, FPFF, etc.) have their own separate renewal cycles — typically five years — and must be kept current independently. The oral prep course itself is a one-time preparation step and does not expire or require renewal.
