The MCA Certificates of Competency that authorise command of commercially and privately operated yachts up to 3,000gt — the career-defining qualifications for superyacht captains.
The Master (200/500/3000gt) — Superyacht track refers to the ladder of MCA Certificates of Competency (CoC) for command-level officers on commercial and private large yachts. These are UK statutory qualifications rooted in the STCW Convention (Regulation II/2 — Master, officer in charge of navigational watch, near-coastal voyages), and are administered under Marine Shipping Notice MSN 1858 (Amendment 2): UK Requirements for Deck Officers on Large Yachts (24m and over).
The track comprises two principal command certificates: Master (Yachts less than 500gt) — the first command CoC, authorising captaincy of yachts up to 500 gross tons on unlimited voyages — and Master (Yachts less than 3000gt) — the senior command II/2 CoC covering the vast majority of the superyacht fleet, including most vessels up to 90m and beyond in length. Both are assessed via the IAMI (International Association of Maritime Institutions) written examination system, followed by an MCA oral examination. Qualifications must be obtained at MCA-approved Maritime and Professional Training (MPT) providers.
The Master (Yachts less than 3000gt) II/2 CoC is issued by the MCA (UK flag authority) and is widely accepted by the major open-registry flag states — Cayman Islands, Marshall Islands, Bahamas, Malta and others — making it the de facto international standard for superyacht command. Per MSN 1858, all Masters on UK-registered yachts of 24m load line length and over, operating under 3,000gt, must hold the appropriate II/2 CoC. The qualification is modular: candidates complete each subject module separately, typically spreading training across 12–24 months while accumulating the required sea service.
The full journey from Deckhand/AB to Master (Yachts less than 3000gt) typically takes 8–12 years, depending on sea time accumulation and opportunities. The Master 3000gt CoC opens captaincy roles across the vast majority of the global superyacht fleet — most commercially operated and privately registered yachts, including those over 60m, fall within the 3,000gt threshold. The certificate is accepted by Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, Marshall Islands, Bahamas Maritime Authority, Malta, and other principal flag states, making holders internationally competitive for command positions.
Costs above are indicative for the full modular pathway (UK providers), inclusive of all written modules, ancillary safety certificates, medical, and MCA administration. Individual module costs vary by provider: for example, the Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator module (12 days) is approximately £2,850 non-residential at UKSA; Seamanship, Stability, and Business and Law modules are approximately £1,085–£1,250 each. European providers such as Blue Water Yachting (Antibes/Palma) price comparable modules at approximately €1,305–€3,250 plus an IAMI exam fee of around €240 per subject. Celestial Navigation exam passes are valid for 1 year; all other written module passes are valid for 3 years — candidates must manage rolling expiry dates across the pathway.
All MCA STCW Certificates of Competency must be revalidated every 5 years. To revalidate, holders must satisfy one of the following sea-service criteria:
Additionally, at revalidation deck officers must hold a valid ENG1 medical certificate, current Basic and Advanced Fire Fighting certificates (within 5 years), a UK GMDSS certificate, and an ECDIS certificate. Applications are processed by the MCA Seafarer Training and Certification Branch, Southampton.
UK MCA-approved Maritime and Professional Training (MPT) providers offering the full Master (Yachts) modular pathway include Warsash Maritime (Solent University) in Southampton and UKSA on the Isle of Wight. European providers such as Blue Water Yachting (Antibes and Palma) also deliver MCA-approved modules for candidates based in the Mediterranean.
