Course Overview

The Interior/Stewardess/GUEST course is the industry-standard entry pathway for crew joining the interior department of a luxury or superyacht. The training framework is the GUEST programme — Guidelines for Unified Excellence in Service Training — created in 2010 by the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) in consultation with major industry bodies. It is now accredited and administered by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI). GUEST has been endorsed by SYBAss, MYBA, the International Superyacht Society, and IAMI. It is an industry-led standard, not a flag-state regulatory requirement — it is separate from STCW, MCA officer certificates, and RYA qualifications.

The GUEST framework is structured across three tiers. The Introduction Level (Junior Steward/ess) covers four core units: introduction to yachting and yachting life, basic housekeeping and laundry services, basic food and beverage service, and basic wine, bartending and mixology. Most providers bundle these GUEST Introduction units together with STCW Basic Safety Training, an ENG1 medical, Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene, RYA Powerboat Level 2, and VHF Short Range Radio into a single packaged programme lasting two to three weeks. The STCW Basic Safety Training component within these bundled packages is a genuine flag-state regulatory requirement for crew on commercially operated vessels — the GUEST elements are not.

Specialist elective modules within the GUEST framework cover cigars, floristry, barista skills, advanced wine and advanced bartending. The Advanced Level (Senior Steward/ess) and Management Level (Chief Steward/ess) tiers build on the Introduction Level with progressively more demanding units in interior administration, advanced food and beverage, valet services, event management, human resources, accounting and leadership — each requiring documented sea service before enrolment.

  • Minimum age 18 years
  • No prior yachting or sea service required

Career Progression

Before
STCW Basic Safety Training + ENG1 Medical
No prior yachting qualification is required. STCW Basic Safety Training is a legal requirement for crew on commercial vessels and is included within most bundled stewardess programmes. An ENG1 seafarer medical certificate is required before taking up sea employment.
This Course
GUEST Introduction Level — Junior Steward/ess CoC
Four GUEST core units covering housekeeping, laundry, food and beverage, and wine and bartending. On completion — together with STCW BST, Food Safety Level 2, and ENG1 — candidates are awarded the IAMI/GUEST Junior Steward/ess Certificate of Competency: the recognised industry entry credential.
Next Step
GUEST Advanced Level — Senior Steward/ess
After a minimum of 12 months' yacht service and 60 documented days of guest service, crew progress to GUEST Advanced Level units covering yacht interior administration, advanced food and beverage service, advanced laundry, housekeeping and valet. This leads to the Senior Steward/ess CoC.
Beyond
GUEST Management Level — Chief Steward/ess
After at least two seasons of operational-level experience, crew can progress to Management Level units in destination and event management, human resources, accounting and foundation leadership — qualifying as Chief Steward/ess and eventually Head of Interior or Purser on larger vessels.

The Junior Steward/ess CoC opens the door to entry-level interior crew positions aboard superyachts, typically vessels of 24 metres and above. While no flag state mandates holding the GUEST certificate as a condition of employment, it is the de facto standard that crewing agencies and captains look for when hiring. Interior crew with the Introduction Level CoC can expect to join as a third or fourth steward/ess on larger vessels, or as a solo stew on smaller yachts. Parallel STCW endorsements — such as PSCRB, Medical First Aid, and later Officer of the Watch endorsements — are accumulated as sea time and rank increase.

Certificate renewal: The GUEST/IAMI Certificate of Competency is a competency-based award rather than a time-limited endorsement — no fixed renewal cycle has been confirmed publicly. The STCW Basic Safety Training certificate bundled in most stewardess programmes is time-limited and must be revalidated every 5 years, either by retaking the refresher course or by demonstrating one year of sea service in the preceding five years (STCW 2010 Manila Amendments, Regulation VI/1). The ENG1 Medical Certificate is valid for two years and must be renewed before expiry. RYA Powerboat Level 2 and VHF Short Range Radio certificates do not expire. Confirm any revalidation requirements directly with IAMI and the relevant flag-state authority.
