The recognised entry qualification for superyacht interior crew — covering service, housekeeping, laundry and food and beverage across the industry-standard GUEST framework.
The Interior/Stewardess/GUEST course is the industry-standard entry pathway for crew joining the interior department of a luxury or superyacht. The training framework is the GUEST programme — Guidelines for Unified Excellence in Service Training — created in 2010 by the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) in consultation with major industry bodies. It is now accredited and administered by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI). GUEST has been endorsed by SYBAss, MYBA, the International Superyacht Society, and IAMI. It is an industry-led standard, not a flag-state regulatory requirement — it is separate from STCW, MCA officer certificates, and RYA qualifications.
The GUEST framework is structured across three tiers. The Introduction Level (Junior Steward/ess) covers four core units: introduction to yachting and yachting life, basic housekeeping and laundry services, basic food and beverage service, and basic wine, bartending and mixology. Most providers bundle these GUEST Introduction units together with STCW Basic Safety Training, an ENG1 medical, Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene, RYA Powerboat Level 2, and VHF Short Range Radio into a single packaged programme lasting two to three weeks. The STCW Basic Safety Training component within these bundled packages is a genuine flag-state regulatory requirement for crew on commercially operated vessels — the GUEST elements are not.
Specialist elective modules within the GUEST framework cover cigars, floristry, barista skills, advanced wine and advanced bartending. The Advanced Level (Senior Steward/ess) and Management Level (Chief Steward/ess) tiers build on the Introduction Level with progressively more demanding units in interior administration, advanced food and beverage, valet services, event management, human resources, accounting and leadership — each requiring documented sea service before enrolment.
The Junior Steward/ess CoC opens the door to entry-level interior crew positions aboard superyachts, typically vessels of 24 metres and above. While no flag state mandates holding the GUEST certificate as a condition of employment, it is the de facto standard that crewing agencies and captains look for when hiring. Interior crew with the Introduction Level CoC can expect to join as a third or fourth steward/ess on larger vessels, or as a solo stew on smaller yachts. Parallel STCW endorsements — such as PSCRB, Medical First Aid, and later Officer of the Watch endorsements — are accumulated as sea time and rank increase.
