The blended academic programme that prepares engine room ratings and junior engineers for the MCA Certificate of Competency at operational level under STCW Regulation III/1 — studied around your sea service commitments.
The Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) distance learning course is a blended academic programme designed to qualify candidates for the MCA Certificate of Competency (CoC) at operational level under STCW Regulation III/1. The certificate authorises the holder to stand an unsupervised engineering watch as officer-in-charge of the main propulsion plant and associated auxiliaries on merchant vessels of 750 kW or more, on any route worldwide.
The distance learning variant — offered by South Shields Marine School (part of Tyne Coast College) — delivers the IAMI Engineering Science A and B modules, and the Engineering Knowledge written syllabus, via e-learning or remote live delivery (Microsoft Teams). This allows candidates to study from sea or home, fitting study around active sea service. Practical workshop skills training (hand tools, lathes, milling, welding, and electrical/electronic practice) still requires approximately 15 weeks of in-person attendance at college.
The programme is governed by STCW Convention Regulation III/1 and Section A-III/1 of the STCW Code (as amended Manila 2010). UK certification requirements are detailed in MCA Marine Shipping Notice MSN 1857 (M+F) Amendment 1. Written examinations are administered by IAMI (Institute of Automotive and Marine Industries) and sat at approved centres five times per year. Following the written examinations and completion of sea service, candidates apply to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility and then sit an MCA oral examination before the Certificate of Competency is issued.
The EOOW Certificate of Competency (Unlimited) opens the door to watchkeeping officer positions on merchant vessels of any propulsion power and on any route worldwide. It is equally relevant to superyacht engineers on large motor yachts operating commercially at 500 GT or above under STCW requirements. Experienced EOOWs may also elect to pursue an Electro-Technical Officer qualification (STCW III/6) as a parallel career development route.
Revalidation: UK Certificates of Competency issued under STCW are valid for five years. Before expiry, holders must revalidate their STCW endorsement under MCA guidance (MSN 1861). Revalidation requires evidence of sufficient seagoing service in the preceding five years (at least 12 months), completion of approved refresher or update training, or — where insufficient sea service has been accrued — a revalidation oral examination with the MCA. The CoC document itself is permanent; it is the STCW endorsement that lapses without revalidation, rendering the holder unable to serve in the officer capacity until revalidated.
