Course Overview

The Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) is an MCA-approved training course and examination that results in a Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It is underpinned by STCW Regulation A-II/5 (able seafarers on deck), with UK-specific requirements set out in MSN 1862 (M) Amendment 1 — "UK Requirements for Deck Ratings." The course covers the full breadth of practical seamanship and vessel operations expected of a competent deck rating.

Assessment is by practical observation and oral or written examination conducted by an MCA-approved examiner. The EDH Certificate of Proficiency is internationally recognised by flag states, ship operators, and employers under the STCW framework, making it directly transferable across the commercial maritime industry — including superyachts and commercial yachts.

The EDH is aimed at deck ratings on commercial vessels who are progressing beyond entry-level watchkeeping roles. It is the mandatory prerequisite for the Able Seafarer Deck (ASD) Certificate of Proficiency under STCW Regulation II/5. Anyone seeking to move from a Navigational Watch Rating (NWR) or equivalent role toward Able Seafarer Deck — and ultimately Officer of the Watch — must hold an EDH.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 17
  • Valid ENG1 medical fitness certificate
  • Minimum 6 months' sea service on vessels of 15 m or more (required before CoP is issued)
  • One of: NWR CoP; MCA-accepted Yachtmaster Offshore; Yacht Rating CoP (with 6 months' yacht service and steering or NWR cert); Boat Master Licence Tier 1 Level 2; Tug Rating (6 months + steering/NWR cert); UK Class 1 or 2 Fishing CoC; Seafish 16.5 m Skipper's Certificate (6+ months service); or enrolment in an MCA-approved OOW cadet programme
  • Candidates may attend the course before completing sea service — the CoP is not issued until service is verified

What You'll Learn

  • Shipboard organisation and vessel operations
  • Pilot ladder rigging and means of access
  • Cargo work — hatch covers, containers, securing equipment, crane operations
  • Seamanship — knots, bends and hitches, rope and wire splicing, rigging a bosun's chair and stage
  • Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen (COSWOP)
  • Firefighting principles and drills
  • Lookout and steering duties
  • Maintenance and painting
  • Marine pollution prevention

Career Progression

BEFORE
Navigational Watch Rating (NWR) or Equivalent
Hold one of the accepted entry-level certificates — NWR CoP, Yachtmaster Offshore, Yacht Rating CoP, or a recognised equivalent — plus a valid ENG1 medical and at least 6 months' qualifying sea service on vessels of 15 m or more.
THIS COURSE
Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)
A 5-day MCA-approved course and examination covering practical seamanship, cargo work, COSWOP, firefighting, and marine pollution prevention. On successful completion and verification of sea service, the MCA issues the EDH Certificate of Proficiency — valid indefinitely, internationally recognised under STCW.
NEXT STEP
Able Seafarer Deck (ASD)
The EDH is a mandatory prerequisite for the Able Seafarer Deck Certificate of Proficiency (STCW Regulation II/5). ASD additionally requires 18 months' sea service as an NWR holder (or 12 months under an MNTB-approved training programme). From ASD, the pathway continues toward Officer of the Watch.

Holding an EDH Certificate of Proficiency demonstrates verified, examiner-assessed competence at the deck rating level and is required by commercial operators recruiting ratings for merchant vessels, cruise ships, and commercial yachts. In the superyacht sector, the natural continuation of this pathway leads toward the Officer of the Watch (Yachts under 3,000 GT) certificate. The EDH never expires, so it remains on your Seafarer Record of Training permanently once issued.
