Course Overview

A superyacht deckhand intro package is a commercial training bundle assembled by maritime training providers to bring a career changer or new entrant to the minimum employable standard for work as a junior deckhand on a commercially operated superyacht. It is not a single regulated certificate — the bundle name is a marketing term for a collection of discrete, individually issued qualifications. The core legal component is STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the STCW Convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended) and regulated in the UK by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

STCW BST covers four mandatory elements under STCW Regulation VI/1: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR). Typically delivered over 4–5 days, it is a legal requirement — no commercial vessel operator may employ a seafarer without it, regardless of flag state on yachts operating commercially. STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD), required under Regulation VI/6, is a standard addition. Beyond the statutory elements, most intro packages fold in RYA Powerboat Level 2 (industry-standard for tender driving), RYA Personal Watercraft (PWC) Proficiency, and RYA Short Range Certificate (VHF/SRC) for marine radio operation. Practical deckhand skills — rope work, knots, splicing, teak care, washdowns, fender deployment, anchor handling, and guest-facing water sports operations — are delivered and assessed by the provider, completing the bundle.

Some providers include a CV clinic, career placement support, and an industry induction covering topics such as tax, what to pack, and dock-walking advice. The full package typically runs 10–15 days, with 15-day residential programmes (such as Flying Fish in Cowes) representing the most comprehensive UK option. Providers offering this programme are found in the UK, South Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, and Australia, reflecting the international nature of the superyacht industry's main crew recruitment hubs.

Career Progression

BEFORE
No qualifications required
This is the true entry point for superyacht careers. Candidates typically come from hospitality, fitness, diving, tourism, or outdoor/marine backgrounds. No prior sea experience or maritime certificates are needed. Some candidates complete RYA Day Skipper theory beforehand, which is complementary but not required.
THIS COURSE
Deckhand / Superyacht Intro Package
Upon completion you hold STCW BST (the legal gateway credential for commercial seafaring), STCW PDSD, RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA PWC Certificate, and RYA Short Range Certificate — making you immediately employable as junior deckhand or entry-level exterior crew on a superyacht.
NEXT STEP
MCA Efficient Deckhand (EDH)
After 6+ months sea service on vessels over 15m, candidates pursue the MCA Efficient Deckhand (EDH) certificate, which formally qualifies a deckhand as a Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW) under STCW Table A-II/1. Beyond EDH, the deck ladder progresses to Bosun, Officer of the Watch, and ultimately Master.

A completed intro package makes a candidate immediately employable as a junior deckhand or entry-level exterior crew member on a superyacht. Typical starting salaries range from approximately €2,000–€3,500 per month, depending on vessel size, with accommodation, food, and travel commonly provided on board. With 1–2 years of sea service, candidates progress to experienced or senior deckhand roles (€3,500–€4,500/month) and, in time, to bosun (€5,500–€8,000/month on larger vessels). The full deck career ladder — from junior deckhand to Master — typically spans 10–15 years of progressive sea service and examination.

Renewal and Revalidation: The STCW Basic Safety Training certificate is valid for 5 years and must be revalidated before expiry. Candidates with 360 or more days of qualifying sea service within the 5-year period are eligible for a shorter revalidation route (typically 2 days); those with limited sea service must complete a longer refresher (typically 3 days). Failing to revalidate within 5 years requires a full BST retake. The ENG1 seafarer medical certificate is valid for 2 years and must be renewed with an MCA-approved doctor. RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA PWC, and RYA Short Range Certificate (VHF/SRC) do not expire once issued — they are held for life.
