Course Overview

The Chief Mate (Unlimited) Post Cadetship — Examination Route is a shore-based academic and exam preparation programme that leads to the MCA Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency (CoC) under STCW Convention regulation II/2. The course is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) under the modernised seafarer training framework (MIN 720(M)), with the academic component accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). The underlying international competence standards are set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code, and the relevant UK statutory instrument is MSN 1856 (M+F) Amendment 1.

The programme covers passage planning and voyage management at management level, advanced ship stability and structure, bridge resource management, cargo operations, shipboard management, maritime law, marine meteorology, ECDIS at management level, and command and leadership competencies. It also incorporates or bundles the mandatory NAEST(M) (Navigation and Watchkeeping Simulator, Management Level) and HELM(M) (Human Element Leadership and Management, Management Level) short courses. The pathway concludes with SQA written examinations in Navigation and in Stability and Structure, followed by an MCA Oral Examination B, after which the MCA issues the CoC.

Any UK deck officer who has completed a cadetship, holds an OOW (Unlimited) II/1 CoC, and has accumulated at least 12 months of approved watchkeeping sea service must complete this programme in order to serve as Chief Mate on commercial vessels of 500 GT or more in unrestricted trading areas. It applies across all vessel types — cargo ships, tankers, passenger vessels, RoPax, bulk carriers, and large commercial yachts above applicable gross tonnage thresholds. No officer may lawfully serve as Chief Mate on an unlimited vessel without this certificate.

Career Progression

BEFORE
Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) — STCW II/1
Complete a cadetship and the OOW examination route to obtain the OOW Unlimited CoC. Then accumulate a minimum of 12 months' approved sea service as a certificated OOW before enrolling on this programme.
THIS COURSE
Chief Mate (Unlimited) Post Cadetship — Examination Route
15–21 weeks of MCA-approved taught content covering management-level navigation, stability, cargo operations, leadership and law, culminating in SQA written papers and an MCA Oral Examination B. Results in the Chief Mate (Unlimited) CoC — STCW II/2. The same examination route concurrently awards a Master (<3,000 GT) CoC.
NEXT STEP
Master (Unlimited) — STCW II/2
Accumulate 36 months' total watchkeeping sea service (reduced to 24 months if at least 12 were served as Chief Mate), then sit and pass MCA Oral Examination A. The concurrent Master (<3,000 GT) award enables command appointments on smaller commercial vessels in the interim.

Holding the Chief Mate (Unlimited) CoC authorises service as Chief Mate on any merchant vessel of unlimited gross tonnage anywhere in the world. The concurrent award of Master (<3,000 GT) at the same examination opens the door to command appointments on smaller commercial ships — including large commercial yachts, offshore support vessels, and coastal cargo ships — while accumulating the sea time required for the full Master Unlimited certificate. Officers in possession of the Chief Mate (Unlimited) CoC are sought after across all deep-sea shipping sectors and form the direct management-level pipeline for bridge command.

Revalidation: The Chief Mate (Unlimited) CoC is valid for five years and must be revalidated with the MCA before expiry. Revalidation requires a minimum of 12 months' sea service as master or deck officer on vessels exceeding 80 GT in the preceding five years, a valid ENG1 medical certificate, and current Basic and Advanced firefighting, GMDSS, and ECDIS certificates. An ECDIS limitation is applied to the revalidated CoC where the ECDIS certificate is absent. Applications are made electronically through the MCA Seafarer Training and Certification Branch. Sea service must be verified by a company letter — self-certified time is not accepted. The ancillary STCW safety certificates (firefighting, medical, proficiency in survival craft, etc.) each carry their own five-year renewal cycles and must be kept current independently.
