STCW Degree Programme Career Advancement Ireland / UK

BEng Marine Engineering
(officer cadet degree)

A full-time three-year undergraduate degree combining academic engineering study with mandatory sea service, designed to qualify graduates as Merchant Navy Engineer Officers of the Watch under STCW Regulation III/1.

Duration: 3 years full-time
Issuing body: MCA (UK) / Irish Maritime Administration
CoC validity: 5 years

Course Overview

The BEng Marine Engineering (Officer Cadet) is a full-time undergraduate degree programme that integrates academic engineering education with the practical and professional training required to meet the international Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention. Specifically, it addresses STCW Regulation III/1 — Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (EOOW). On successful completion, graduates are eligible to apply for a Certificate of Competency as Engineer Officer of the Watch, the entry-level officer qualification for the engine room department on merchant vessels of 750 kW propulsion power or more.

The curriculum covers marine engineering systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical and electronic engineering principles, mathematics, propulsion machinery, auxiliary systems, cargo handling simulation, welding and mechanical workshop practice, and shipboard safety. Practical training is conducted in the college engine room, simulation suites, and aboard commercial vessels during embedded sea phases. In Ireland, the programme is offered by the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), a campus of Munster Technological University (MTU), under programme code MT764, and is approved by the Irish Maritime Administration. UK equivalents — offered at institutions such as Fleetwood Nautical Campus and Warsash Maritime — are approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB).

This is the standard entry pathway for officer cadets entering through company-sponsored cadetship schemes. In practice, many cadets are sponsored by a shipping company, which covers tuition and living costs in exchange for a period of post-qualification service. The degree route is one of several pathways to the EOOW Certificate of Competency — others include the HND, Foundation Degree, and HNC routes — but the BEng provides the highest academic attainment at entry level and the strongest platform for progression to Chief Engineer.

Entry Requirements

  • Ireland (NMCI MT764): Irish Leaving Certificate passes in five subjects at O6/H7 minimum, including Mathematics and English or Irish (approx. 227 CAO points)
  • UK (e.g. Fleetwood BEng Hons): 60 UCAS points including a numerate subject; GCSEs at grade 4/5 minimum in Mathematics, English Language, and a Science subject
  • Approved Merchant Navy medical examination (ENG1 or Irish equivalent)
  • Ability to qualify for a Seafarer's Discharge Book
  • Typically requires sponsorship from a shipping company or cadetship scheme
  • No prior sea service required — sea time is accumulated during the programme

What You'll Learn

  • Marine engineering systems and propulsion machinery
  • Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
  • Electrical and electronic engineering principles
  • Auxiliary systems and cargo handling operations
  • Welding, mechanical workshop practice, and fault diagnosis
  • Shipboard safety and STCW mandatory training modules
  • Engine room watchkeeping duties and simulator training
  • Applied mathematics and engineering science

Career Progression

BEFORE
Secondary school leaver or engineering career changer
No maritime qualifications are required prior to starting. Candidates enter directly from secondary school (or equivalent) with the required academic grades and a pass on the seafarer's medical examination. A sponsoring shipping company is typically arranged before enrolment.
THIS COURSE
BEng Marine Engineering (officer cadet degree)
Three-year full-time programme awarding a BEng (Hons) degree (NFQ Level 8 in Ireland; Honours degree in the UK) and conferring eligibility to apply for the Certificate of Competency as Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), aligned with STCW Regulation III/1. Authorises the holder to serve as an officer in charge of an engineering watch on any merchant vessel of 750 kW propulsion power or more.
NEXT STEP
Second Engineer Officer CoC → Chief Engineer Officer CoC
With a minimum of 12 months additional sea service at EOOW level, officers can progress to Second Engineer Certificate of Competency. With further sea service (typically 36 months aggregate at management level) and additional examinations, progression to Chief Engineer Officer CoC (STCW Regulation III/2) is achievable. Shore-based options include marine surveyor, technical superintendent, fleet manager, and roles with maritime regulatory authorities.

Graduates initially serve as Engineer Officer of the Watch (Junior or Third Engineer) on merchant vessels across all sectors — container shipping, bulk carriers, tankers, cruise ships, and offshore support. The EOOW Certificate of Competency is unlimited in scope: it carries no tonnage or trading area restriction. As sea service and experience accrue, the typical progression runs OOW Engineering (STCW III/1) to Second Engineer to Chief Engineer (STCW III/2), with Chief Engineer representing the senior technical officer role aboard any merchant vessel. Shore-based pathways open after several years at sea and include positions as marine superintendent, fleet technical manager, classification society surveyor, MCA inspector, or port engineer.

Revalidation: The BEng degree itself does not expire. The Certificate of Competency issued on completion is valid for five years and must be revalidated before expiry. Revalidation requires a current ENG1 medical fitness certificate, evidence of sufficient recent sea service or completion of approved refresher training, and current STCW safety certificates including Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid, and Security Awareness. In the UK, revalidation is administered by the MCA under MSN 1857(M+F) Amendment 1 guidance. In Ireland, revalidation is administered by the Irish Maritime Administration / Seafarers Ireland.

Cost figures shown are indicative. EU/Irish students may be eligible for the Irish Higher Education free fees initiative, reducing out-of-pocket costs to approximately €3,000 per year in student contribution charges. UK students are eligible for Student Loans Company (SLC) loans covering the academic component. In practice, many cadets are fully sponsored by a shipping company — verify current funding options with the provider and your prospective sponsoring company.
